My Open Mind's Eye

Here is where I get to write down my thoughts and feelings, my point of view, about everything. Politics, religion, philosophy, science, relationships, basically everything about the world without and the world within. I try to keep an open mind to any and all possibilities, continually striving to remain objective and skeptical, but still willing to give anyone’s POV a chance, no matter how "out there" it may seem. Everyone has their own version of truth. I seek to find the common ground.

Bipartisan is a dirty word.

I believe the term bipartisan should be removed from all political discussions. Why? Do I hold to only one party’s point of view, immediately dismissing the platform of the other? Do I feel that there should be only one true party in politics? Of course not! What I object to is the “need” to use the term, not the term itself.

Bipartisan means “consisting of, or supported by the members of two parties”. This implies that there has to be only two parties and thus only two points of view to choose from. When your stuck with either/or, you unnecessarily limit yourself. Your knee-jerk reaction is to judge one side as right and therefore the other as wrong. This natural assumption causes undue polarization and you never stop to think that there might be yet another solution or option.

What it really comes down to is that I don’t approve of “yeah or nay” thinking. Why, in this country, are we expected to choose between republican or democrat, liberal or conservative? When an issue pops up, why do so many people automatically want to draw a line in the sand and expect everyone to choose sides? Why do people act like we can’t support our troops without supporting the war? Why can’t we love our country if we berate the administration that runs the government?

It is this “either your with us or against us” mentality that has polarized this country to the point that we can’t seem to get anything done. Politicians spend far too much time debating, protesting, posturing and “towing the party line”, whatever it may be and not acting on what they feel is the right thing to do.

So I guess I lied, I do want only one true “party”, if you consider everyone who runs for election as an independent to be under one party. What I want are politicians who don’t blindly follow the will of their peers, but make decisions based on their own instincts and conscious. I want a politician that is willing to do the right thing, take a stand and make the right choices regardless of whether it is politically correct or not. I want to rid our country of the bipartisan ideology. Our great nation doesn’t need any more republicans or democrats, any more liberals or conservatives. What we need is more leaders, in the truest sense of the word.
